Although macular degeneration is incurable, some treatments exist that can hinder the progress or even restore vision. Options may include:
Causes of Macular Degeneration
Macular degeneration is a multifactorial disease that comes about through environmental effects, including genetics, smoking, and malnutrition. There are two primary forms of macular degeneration: dry and wet.
Dry Macular Degeneration
It occurs in over 80% of the cases. The macula dries and grows in a condition called drusen and becomes clumpy over time. The enlarged druse continues growing in number as well and eventually ends up reducing one’s central vision.
Wet Macular Degeneration
Wet macular degeneration is less frequent but a more serious condition due to the uncontrolled growth of new vessels under the retina’s layer. These vessels may leak blood or fluid, resulting in sudden and extreme loss of vision.
Symptoms and Early Detection
Early detection of macular degeneration allows for early intervention and prevention of disease progression. Some common symptoms include:
- Blurred or distorted vision
- It appears as a dark or blank space in the middle of the field of view.
- Adapting difficulties to low light.
- Trouble recognizing faces
- For them to read or for carrying out close activities, they require more light.
Regular eye checkups help in early detection. If you experience these symptoms, please visit an eye doctor immediately.
Treatment and Management
Although macular is incurable, some treatments exist that can hinder the progress or even restore vision. Options may include:
- For Dry Macular Degeneration: These include lifestyle modifications, nutritional supplements, or monitoring.
- For Wet Macular Degeneration: The treatments can include injections, laser or photodynamic therapy.
You should, therefore, ensure that you work in hand with your eye doctor so that they can formulate a unique management and prescription regime.
Living with Macular Degeneration
The process of adjusting to macular degeneration is not easy; however, there are ways to enjoy a happy life. Rehabilitation services, prosthetics (visual aids), and therapy will help improve daily functioning and independence.
